| Tragedy - Wednesday, April 18, 2007 - Sunday, April 22, 2007 One soldier was killed and another ctitically injured from our troop in Baghdad earlier this week. Please pray for the fallen soldier's Mom that God would console her and pray for the brave sergeant who was injured and finally pray for our troopers that were shaken by the loss of their friend.

It is always a red-letter day when we are able to hear Sam’s voice on the phone!
It has been twelve days since we have heard from him (yes, long days and yes, I am counting). They have been on patrols constantly. There are only hours in between patrols. When he called Karissa and then us this morning he had gotten back from patrol a little earlier and was going back out approximately three and half hours after he hung up with us. Not an awful lot of time to get to sleep; they’re all so tired.. Sam said he doesn’t believe he will ever work this hard in his life again…
It has been very difficult over there since he called us last. Since Genevie’s death (April 16th) there have been three more casualties from 1-4 CAV; one a good friend of Sam’s. Chris North was in a different troop as were the other two soldiers (Steve Walberg and Jason Morales). Please pray for these young men’s families and for our guys for the loss of their brothers in arms.
Even with all Sam has been and is going through he wanted us to tell his Grandma Roberta that she is spending too much money on sending him goodies- he’s worried about her. She is keeping Sam and some of the guys supplied in dried fruit and nuts. When we called Roberta to relay his message she said if he asks her to stop she will only double her efforts and send even more. How can you blame a Grandma for wanting to bring some small measure of comfort to her favored (and only) grandson!? J God bless you, Roberta~

Ipod saves soldiers life

Photos sent to me by my friend Danny with this caption:
My wife’s uncle works in a military hospital and told me about this. Its pretty amazing. Kevin Garrad (3rd Infantry Division) was on a street patrol in Iraq (Tikrit I believe) and as he rounded the corner of a building an armed (AK-47) insurgent came from the other side.
The two of them were within just a few feet of each other when they opened fire. The insurgent was killed and Kevin was hit in the left chest where his IPod was in his jacket pocket. It slowed the bullet down enough that it did not completely penetrate his body armor. Fortunately, Kevin suffered no wound.
I thought it was a great story so I posted them here.
UPDATE 04.05.07:
I just got an email via flickr from an engineer at Apple. He showed the photos around the office and want to help get the guy a new iPod. So it's looking good that it will be replaced.

What does he do?
Our soldier is a Calvary Scout and all of his platoon members are Calvary Scouts. The Cavalry Scout is the commander's eyes and ears on the battlefield. When information about the enemy is needed, they call on the Scouts. They are trained in reconnaissance, weapons, explosives and mines. When the U.S. Army engages an enemy the Special Forces go in first, the Scouts second and the Infantry last. Their job is dangerous and the Scout's need your prayers. They have trained for the last 18 months at Fort Knox Kentucky, Fort Riley Kansas and the National Training Center at Fort Irwin in California's Mojave Desert. Their mission in Iraq is to secure various neighborhoods in the capitol city of Baghdad.

At the moment they are in Baghdad, Iraq.
What does he need?
Prayers, letters, postcards, e-mails and packages. Some of the things you can include in packages are: Mach3 razor blades, shaving gel, gum (sugarless), Carmex (tube), visine, beef jerkey (store bought w/USDA Symbol)), movie dvd's, candy (no chocolate), magazines, bodywash, lots of snacks etc...For a comprehensive list and contact information see Deb or Jule.
